Established in 1986, Avitabile Deli was created by Giovanni (John) Avitabile. Originally started in a small town called Agerola, around Naples Italy. He and his family made mozzarella from raw milk. Both, his talent and skills allowed Giovanni the courage to open a Cheese Store along with other Imported Italian Products in a predominately Irish neighborhood. The concept started to catch on which allowed the business to expand. John’s wife, Maria, who comes from an even smaller town called Esperia in the province of Frosinone, Italy, became part of the team in the expansion effort. Her culinary skills allowed Avitabile Deli to expand it’s menu by introducing hot lunches and catering for any occasion. As the business continued to grow, Maria’s son, Joe, joined in the efforts to further expand.
The summer of 2006, Giovanni decided that a 100% renovation was necessary, not only to continue to provide quality Foods but to further expand product line and Customer Service. The transformation from a tiny deli to a landmark market in the Mclean Ave area was the result. Dry sausage, soppresata, prosciutto hanging from the ceiling added to the Italian market atmosphere….a deli case showcasing about 15 different homemade salads, fresh sausage, premium Boar’s Head deli meats, a variety of domestic and imported cheeses…..shelves packed with imported pastas, tomatoes, coffees, oils….a tasty menu of hot foods prepared daily……the list goes on and on.
Winning Awards from Yonkers Chamber of Commerce for Best Deli & Best Mozzarella from 2006 through 2013 added to the store’s popularity. Westchester Magazine also praised the Fresh mozzarella as the “Best of Westchester”.
Unfortunately, in the fall of 2012 tragedy struck in the passing of John. His legacy of 25+ years will never be forgotten. Maria and Joe have vowed to continue on the tradition and quality that began in 1986.
